Cottage Revived

London, UK, 2022

This house is located in the stringent John Innes Conservation area in Merton, named after the philanthropist and developer who built the neighbourhood in the 1880s. Both the vernacular style of the cottage and the landscaping in which it sits are key influences for this project. The brief was to refurbish and extend the house to to provide a home for the client and his partner at the height of Covid lock-downs. Creating an efficient design for the small house along with a direct link to the garden were key.

The design accordingly frames the view of the garden with a large set of glazed picture frame doors that lead from the extension onto a small patio. The extension itself is formed with a pitched roof that mirrors the existing dormers, while the patio doors are fitted with glazing bars to better reflect the vernacular style of the house.

To maximise spatial utility, the ground floor is split between a kitchen / dining room to the rear and a reception room to the front. These spaces are separated by a new bathroom and short corridor that retains visual connection through the house. Upstairs a small shower room has been slotted in between fitted wardrobes for maximum convenience. Strong colour identities define each space, creating a sense of contrast and depth when moving through the house. In addition to this, the house has been thermally upgraded with underfloor and roof insulation, along with new double glazed windows throughout.

“I had the pleasure of working with architect Viktor Westerdahl for my full house renovation in a Wimbledon conservation area, and I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Despite the challenges of Covid, planning restrictions, and occasional difficulties with builders, Viktor's professionalism never wavered. His positivity, politeness, honesty and solution-focused approach were truly commendable and appreciated. Throughout the project, he remained responsive and incredibly helpful, ensuring that every aspect of the design and planning process ran smoothly. The end result speaks for itself—a stunning period property with a beautiful extension and garden that exceed all expectations. Without hesitation, I would highly recommend Viktor for any architectural project.”

The rear patio is nested between this lush floral greenery and the cosy embrace of the vaulted ceiling in the extension, with the picture frame glazing providing a gentle threshold.

Outside, the garden has been redone with lush flowers by the client’s partner who is a gardener. The old clay soil has been replaced with fresh top soil and supported with irrigation, enabled through external taps installed to both front and back gardens. Planting that can withstand the shaded dry conditions to the front of the property has revitalised the entrance. In the rear garden, a rich mixture of plants has been grown to establish, over time, which species are best suited for the location.
