Westerdahl provides a comprehensive architecture service, from early feasibility through to planning and technical design, and onward to managing the building process onsite. This gives you peace of mind that your project is properly cared for from beginning to end.

For developers

Our services are rooted in the founder Viktor’s extensive prior experience in designing and delivering large mixed use schemes across London. Coupled with Westerdahl’s work on smaller infill sites, this equips the practice to design and lead small and medium sized developments.

We will always seek to give you clear and realistic advice at the outset of the project and this advice will be based on rigorous feasibility studies. Our work is backed by a good understanding of planning policy and decision making in local planning authorities and a proven track record of securing planning permissions for small challenging sites.

With extensive technical expertise, we are able to lead project teams on your behalf to provide robust drawings and specifications for tender and construction that respects budget constraints and achieves regulatory compliance. Offering a comprehensive service means we will act as both contract administrator and principal designer throughout the construction phase, to enable both value for money and quality in the finished build. Our projects are delivered using Building Information Modelling technology which enables a high degree of coordination and information output.

For homeowners

We start by listening carefully to your needs and we tailor our services and designs accordingly. This often begins with a feasibility study to help you evaluate options in order to take good strategic decisions early on. We then develop the design collaboratively according to your needs and aspirations. We help you define a material identity for your home and craft it in a manner that is uniquely yours. As part of this process we can provide bespoke kitchen designs and refine the smallest detail down to the door handles.

Equally, we advise on the most cost effective methods, so that your money is used wisely on your priorities. We will work to establish a clear and realistic budget, which we will track throughout the project. This includes communicating where design changes might adversely impact cost.

The design phase culminates in a tender and contracting process, so that a suitable builder can be identified and appointed, one who can deliver the design as envisioned and meet expectation on cost. We are then keen to stay on supporting our clients through the construction process. This service de-risks the building works by resolving problems quickly, limits extra spending by holding the contractor accountable, and safeguards quality.

Sustainable design

Sustainability is an integrated part of our design process. We firstly assess existing structures and materials for adaptive reuse, as this is a powerful way to reduce embodied carbon. Secondly, we work with form, orientation and the building fabric to maximise passive performance, as this means your building will need far less technical systems for heating and cooling. Thirdly, we seek to use natural materials with minimal impact on the planet, such as wood and stone, while also minimising the use of concrete.

It also matters how the building is built. Where possible, building off-site is more efficient than building onsite, as factory conditions are less wasteful. Lastly, we try to make our buildings adaptable, reusable and dismountable. When life’s needs change, buildings should either be able to accommodate change, or it should be possible to dismantle them for re-use elsewhere.
